Getting around San Juan

San Juan is a city, and obviously this means that it's hardly a small place. What we're trying to get at here is that you can't enjoy all that San Juan has to offer if you have to worry about getting blisters on your feet or ruining your shoes and sandals merely because you chose to walk. This is why there is an extensive network of public transportation offered in San Juan, Puerto Rico (if you didn't decide to go ahead and rent a car).

Getting around San Juan is actually fairly comfortable, although there are some things you have to watch out for. The buses, for example, are notorious for not being very tourist-friendly; they require exact change, there is no fixed time for the bus to arrive at the bus stop, and not all bus stops give you the route information you need. Nevertheless, you may choose to see riding the buses of San Juan as an adventure and you can give them a whirl (if you don't have an itinerary to follow, this is actually an interesting way to spend your trip).

The taxis, on the other hand, are much easier to manage even if you have to keep on your toes in order to not find yourself overcharged by the driver. It's easy to find taxis in San Juan, Puerto Rico, mostly due to the fact that they have predictable hubs like areas near hotels or the eastern end of Old San Juan's Calle de la Fortaleza. The taxis can take you pretty much anywhere you want in the city (and some outside as well, but that will really cost you), and is the most convenient way to see and experience San Juan outside of a fixed/package tour.

As far as tourist cities go, getting around San Juan could be seen as an adventure in itself, and would make a wonderful addition to your experience.
