Things to Do in San Juan

The Capital City of San Juan in the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico is a favorite vacation destination and tourist attraction, As expected in such a widely visited and patronized place, San Juan offers plenty of attractions and entertainment to the thousands, or rather millions, of tourists, honeymooners, retirees, holidaymakers, vacationers, investors and visitors in general who come and visit their shores.

There are several theaters where plays and concerts are held and where movies are screened in San Juan. One very notable San Juan attraction which many people come to for entertainment is the Teatro Tapis. Not only is the Teatro Tapia the oldest theater in the entire island of Puerto Rico, it is also considered as one of the oldest in the Americas and the entire Western Hemisphere for that matter. This longstanding San Juan attraction has provided entertainment in the island through the plays, concerts, galas and ballets held within its halls until present.

Although not as wild and exciting as Las Vegas or Tijuana, San Juan also offers thrill seekers with casinos and gambling venues where they can enjoy the thrill of the bet and the enjoyment of other people's company. The Casino of Puerto Rico in San Juan is most definitely one of the most popular attractions and entertainment sources in the entire city. Thus relatively old building features classical architecture and interior decorations, from gigantic crystal chandeliers to elaborate wall decorations. It is the haunt of the classy, the sophisticated and especially of those who are feeling lucky.

Shopping is San Juan is also a popular source of entertainment as it is in many tourist locations in the world. Some of the shopping attractions in the City of San Juan are popular names of department stores and store brands such as Wal-Mart, Searsm JCPenny and Kmart. Those wanting unique items and novelty souvenirs from San Juan however, can opt to come to Plaza Carolina, Plaza del Caribe, Mayaguez Mall, Plaza del Carmen, Rio Hondo and the Plaza de Aguadilla.

There are also plenty of bazaars, markets and street side shops in San Juan that offer a wide variety of interesting objects such as gourmet rum, handmade cigars, local crafts work, lace and textile items, wooden and ceramic displays and even musical instruments of fine quality.

San Juan is also home to some very interesting tourist attractions such as the Casa del Libro or the House of Books. This beautiful historic building houses some of the most valuable published treasures in the history of the island including ancient texts, books and other manuscripts. Other sources of entertainment which attracts tourists and vacationers in San Juan include the San Juan Harbor, the Puerto de San Juan or the Gate of San Juan, La Fortaleza, Centro de Bellas Artes, and the Casa de Los Contrafuertes.
